BACKGROUND EXPERIENCE
Courtney Burroughs is an associate with Alvarez, Winthrop, Thompson & Smoak, P.A. in their Tampa office. She has focused her practice on complex civil litigation cases, involving personal injury, wrongful death and general insurance defense, with a focus on commercial transportation defense and commercial premises litigation.
Courtney graduated summa cum laude with a B.A. in Spanish Language and Literature and International Studies from State University of New York at Buffalo. After graduation, Courtney lived and worked in Russia as a Fulbright Scholar and Critical Language Enhancement Award recipient. She returned to the United States and attended the University of Miami School of Law, graduating cum laude in 2018. During law school, she interned at the Immigration Clinic where she successfully defended her clients in removal proceedings.
Courtney began her legal career as an Assistant State Attorney in Miami-Dade County where she prosecuted misdemeanor and felony cases, including manslaughter, attempted homicide, capital sexual battery, armed robbery, and drug trafficking among other serious crimes. Courtney left the State Attorney’s Office and accepted a position with Alvarez, Winthrop, Thompson & Smoak, P.A. where she continues her career as a litigator. She has brought the insight she garnered over to the civil side in the hope that she will be able to use this experience to aggressively defend our clients.
Courtney has considerable experience representing commercial carriers and a wide range of transportation litigation, including catastrophic and complex multi-party collisions involving tractor-trailers, tow trucks, bus lines, and other commercial vehicles. She also routinely handles claims where our firm has been asked to represent shopping centers, restaurants, nightclubs, retail establishments and other premises owners in litigation arising from all aspects of premises liability.
Courtney speaks Spanish, Russian and Italian. Outside of the office, she enjoys kayaking, cooking, and studying foreign languages.
