Carla Sabbagh is Senior Counsel with Alvarez, Winthrop, Thompson & Smoak, P.A. and she is the firm’s appellate practice leader. Her trial practice has focused primarily on insurance defense, and she has considerable experience representing shopping centers, restaurants, night clubs, retail establishments and other premises owners in the defense of litigation arising from all aspects of premises liability, including personal injury claims, wrongful death claims and construction defect claims. Carla’s practice also includes representing a variety of insureds and self-insureds in a wide variety of automobile and commercial transportation litigation and her knowledge of insurance has served her well in handling “bad faith” claims. Carla has also represented a wide variety of clients in business litigation, and cases involving all aspects of commercial torts, copyright infringement.

Carla has been admitted to practice in all federal courts in Florida, the Eleventh Circuit Court of Appeals, and the United States Supreme Court. She has significant appellate experience in both state and federal courts, and has obtained favorable results for her clients from the Florida Supreme Court. Her significant experience in a broad range of litigated matters provide her with a considerable advantage as our firm’s appellate practice leader.

While earning undergraduate degrees in psychology and criminology from the University of Florida, Carla began her law enforcement career, first as a police service technician and later as a police communications operator (dispatcher). In 2006, Carla began her legal studies at the Levin College of Law. While obtaining her law degree, Carla worked as a legal assistant at a personal injury law firm, giving her an insider's view of the plaintiffs' approach to pre-suit negotiations and litigation strategies. Following her admission to the Florida Bar, Carla joined a well-respected insurance defense firm before coming to our firm.

A native of Guatemala, Carla was raised in Texas and Florida. When she is not representing clients, Carla devotes her time to fostering special needs dogs and operating a dog rescue in Gainesville, Florida.
